Fotógrafo que revolucionó la iconografía de la moda a mediados del siglo XX al unir arte y publicidad, vanguardia y sentido comercial a través de enfoques extremos que descontextualizan a la persona tratándola de objeto, el uso marcado del contraste entre blanco y negro y la sencillez conseguida a través de fondos grises o blancos con la incorporación de conceptos como “menos es más” o “en la sencillez está el gusto”.
Trabajó para Vogue a lo largo de siete décadas. Su primera portada para la revista fue en 1943, y llegó a realizar hasta 158.
Además de fotógrafo de moda, fue un gran retratista, por su objetivo pasaron artistas, estrellas de cine y personajes conocidos de la época, así como gente común (bomberos, panaderos, costureras o barrenderos) y aborígenes. También fotografió objetos como colillas, botes de cosmética, flores, comidas o partes de animales.
